Hearty Oats

Hearty Oats
There’s no better way to start a day than with a steaming bowl of oats. This gluten-free whole grain is packed with fibre and is a great source of slow releasing energy to get you through any morning. Although oats are a carbohydrate, the fibre in oats slows down the rate of digestion, making you feel fuller for longer which means less snacking before lunchtime! The fibre is also responsible for lowering ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol, keeping blood sugars stable, reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and keeping your gut healthy. Packed with minerals manganese, selenium, phosphorus, magnesium and zinc, oats are a real breakfast winner.

The beauty of oats is that if offers you a blank canvas of toppings. Most fruits go well with this hearty breakfast, particularly berries, mango, kiwi fruit and of course the old classic, banana (I have always been a big fan of grapes). Then of course, nuts and seeds both compliment the dish in both taste and offering that extra protein kick. We like to top off our morning creation with a sprinkle of cinnamon. For the super sweet tooth you can add a dollop of honey but we feel the fruit should give you enough sweetness.

Although oats are gluten-free, if they don’t say gluten-free on the packaging there is a great chance that they were processed in a factory with gluten and no doubt cross contamination could have taken place. Bad news if you are a celiac or have a gluten allergy or sensitivity so we recommend choosing brands that clearly state “gluten-free” on the packaging.
